On 6th May (additional performance on 8th May) in Milan, Teatro Dal Verme, will be performed the Italian premiere of Giorgio Battistelli’s Fair is foul, foul is fair with the Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali conducted by Giordano Bellincampi.
The piece takes its title from the words that Shakespeare’s three Fateful Sisters (as the composer writes in his presentation text) murmur on the deserted heath... The same sound flows from the lips of the witches to the lips of Macbeth as soon as he enters the scene. This is the overriding theme of the drama. The alternating voices form an instrument, and run right through the orchestra from the strings to the woodwinds, investing the composition with a dynamism that captures all the echoes of the Shakespearean tragedy – though faster, more compact and more nocturnal….
The world premiere of the piece took place on 26th August 2009 at the Edinburgh Festival (which commissioned it) with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
