The performance, to be conducted by Zoltán Peskó, will take place at the Teatro delle Tese in Venice on 28th September with the soprano Barbara Hannigan as soloist. The composer has explained that “the two orchestras are like the two hemispheres of the brain: on one side the high orchestra and on the other the low. The voice stands in the middle. In the first lied O Erd on a text by Hölderlin the high orchestra adheres perfectly to the voice, it uses the same range. In the second Lied Verwandlungslied the low orchestra enters and it’s as though the voice of the soprano floats on top of this oily, repugnant mass. The impression is created of something lost, a solitude - of the voice, that is - an insurmountable distance. Then the question Was?Was?Was? in the text of the third Lied… but the adherence to the voice is gone. You hear the shadow of the low orchestra and the echoes of that insistent question. Then the voice vanishes. The orchestra stops and… Rilke’s “invisible” is heard in the distance.”
