The world premiere of the new opera by Isidora Žebeljan, Simon der Erwählte (commissioned by the Musiktheater in Revier in Gelsenkirchen), will be performed on 24th June 2009 at the Eichbaumoper in Mülheim an der Ruhr (Germany). The orchestra will be conducted by Bernhard Stengel and the cast includes Anna Agathonos, Piotr Prochera, Dong-Won Seo, Noriko Ogawa-Yatake and Hyun-Seung Oh. The libretto, written by Borislav Čičovački, tells the story of Simon who in the 1970’s was abandoned as an infant in a monastery. On reaching adulthood, Simon decides together with his friend Nikita to set out to discover the world. The two arrive in Mühlheim in the Ruhr, where they become labourers, and where Simon embarks on a relationship with Anna, the pair’s landlady. But a dreadful truth is unveiled: Anna discovers that Simon is her son … Taking flight, Simon returns to the monastry, where he confesses his sin, but it is a sin for which no man can obtain forgiveness. Simon finally settles on the coast of the White Sea, he works hard for many years... up until when he realises that he possesses the power to cure all kinds of disease. On account of these powers, as an old man, he becomes famous throughout the world.
