Inno popolare (“Suona la tromba”) and Cantica (Inno delle nazioni) are the only two surviving secular choral works by Verdi. The results of special commissions, each can be considered a pezzo d’occasione (“occasional piece”), a genre for which the composer repeatedly expressed disdain. Inspired by nationalistic ideals in both cases, Verdi nonetheless accepted the commissions.
